Watch the video and see what makes the
Z 9 the most powerful Nikon ever.
World’s best AF scene detection system.
Best-in-class 8K video resolution and internal recording.
World’s fastest still image frame rate of 120 fps.
World’s fastest scanning speed.
World’s first truly blackout free electronic viewfinder.
First Nikon camera with 4-axis vertical and horizontal tilting monitor.
||Subject detection from deep learning. Automatic. Simultaneous.
A breakthrough algorithm developed using deep learning enables the Z 9 to automatically detect and track the world’s largest range of subjects3—people, dogs, cats, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, trains and planes—in stills and video with no menu changes.
|Keeps up with the smallest, fastest subjects.
AF and AE calculations are made at 120 cycles per second with rapid, constant communication between the lens and the camera through the Z mount. Even small, erratic subjects like birds in flight are tracked with ease.
||Enhanced Eye AF for people, pets and birds. |
Eye Detection AF automatically tracks the eyes of people, dogs, cats and birds (and similar creatures) even when they’re small in the frame, covered by hair, glasses or goggles, right-side up or upside down.
|3D Tracking + Subject Detection. A new dimension of AF.|
The power of Nikon’s acclaimed 3D Tracking is now available with deep learning subject detection. Effortlessly lock onto fast-moving subjects and track them moving toward you, away from you and everywhere in between.
||A groundbreaking new processing engine.
EXPEED 7. The most powerful Nikon processing engine ever. 10x faster than previous generations. Handles complex AF and AE calculations at 120 cycles per second. Separately processes dual-streamed data from the stacked image sensor. Enables next-generation features like 120 fps still shooting, 8K video recording, a blackout-free viewing experience and more.
|Go from zero to 120 fps in the press of a shutter.
To capture moments you may never have seen before, the Z 9 captures 45.7-megapixel stills at an action-freezing 30 fps and press-ready 11-megapixel stills at an insanely fast 120 fps—all with full AF and AE performance and no blackout.
||Keep your finger down. 1,000-image buffer capacity. |
With a seemingly bottomless buffer, the Z 9 shoots continuously for more than 1,000 frames at 20 fps* as full resolution High-Efficiency RAW or JPEG (L) fine files. *When using the recommended memory card: ProGrade Digital CFexpress™ Type B 2.0 Cobalt 1700R.
|The fastest write speeds. Dual CFexpress Type B.|
Under a newly designed latching door are two matched slots optimized for high-performance CFexpress Type B cards. The slots are independent from each other, so you can load cards with different write speeds—including XQD cards.
||Finally, an electronic shutter you can trust.
The electronic shutter in the Z 9 achieves the world’s most minimal rolling-shutter distortion2, eliminating the need for a mechanical shutter. Shoot at shutter speeds up to 1/32,000 second in complete silence, with no shutter vibration and no concerns about shutter wear.
When you need to be invisible, Silent Mode turns off menu sounds and VR Lock and minimizes lens drive noises. And since the Z 9 does not have a mechanical shutter, you can shoot without a shutter click—or plug in headphones so only you can hear the simulated shutter sound.*
Key Features for Z 9 Firmware Version 2.0:
N-RAW Video Recording up to 8.3K/60p and 4.1K/120p.
4K/60p ProRes RAW
New Custom Wide Area AF with 20 selectable options in stills, 12 selectable options in video.
EVF 120fps Refresh Rate Mode
Evolution of video features such as RAW video internal recording in 12-bit 8.3K/60p The Z 9 is now capable of recording RAW video in two different 12-bit RAW video formats — N-RAW and ProRes RAW HQ3. The new format, Nikon's proprietary N-RAW, offers recording with a file size approximately half that of ProRes RAW HQ, providing longer recording time. It supports up to 8.3K/60p and 4.1K/120p when shooting in the FX-based video format. Up to 4.1K/60p can be supported in the FX-based video format with ProRes RAW HQ. A Full-HD mp4 proxy file suitable for transfer and editing is generated at the same time as RAW video file generation in either format. Record a video on a compact system without an external recording device attached and achieve full-scale editing by taking advantage of rich 12-bit tonal gradation utilising video editing software4. Other new features include a variety of useful video functions, such as recording in high-resolution 4K UHD/60p oversampled from 8K.
The version update introduces the Pre-Release Capture for the first time in a full-frame mirrorless camera. This new feature prevents photographers from missing decisive moments by recording for up to a second before the shutter-release button is pressed all the way down during High-Speed Frame Capture+. For instance, users can capture the moment when a baseball bat hits a ball even when pressing the button all the way down after seeing the batter hit the ball while half pressing the button.
New AF modes:
Improved AF performance, including Custom Wide-Area AF with 20 options The updated firmware adds Custom Wide-Area AF, which is similar to the Custom Group-Area AF that is highly evaluated with the D6. The pattern of AF area arrangement is selectable from 20 options for stills and 12 for videos, realizing the capture of main subjects in a wide range of scenes. Since it also supports subject detection, you can nail the decisive moment with perfect focus on an athlete behind obstacles in hurdling, for example, by setting the AF area to the upper half of the frame. Also, through reassessment of the algorithm, AF stability, tracking performance, and subject detection in low-light situations have been enhanced.
